A Late 17th Century Japanese Export Cabinet on 18th Century English Stand
The mid Edo period black lacquered (Urushi) and gilt (Maki-e) cabinet inlaid with mother of Pearl (Aogai), worked brass hinges and mounts, the doors open to eight drawers each profusely inlaid with mother of Pearl, the interior of the doors and drawer fronts really shows the unfaded colours chosen in their full glory, the drawers interiors are red lacquered throughout.
The base is English circa 1740-50, the cabinet in its native surroundings would have sat on the floor but the English taste demanded these elegant stands.
Untouched dry surface, a wonderfully “found” demeanour to the whole.
Cabinet circa 1690, stand circa 1740-50.
53” tall x 18.5“ deep x 31” wide.
134.5cm x 47cm x 79cm.
