A Pair of 18th Century Chinese Reverse Glass Mirrors
A rare pair of Chinese reverse painted mirrors within gilt and black Japanned frames.
Qing Dynasty, late 18th century.
The process and emergence of this unique art form began after 1715 with the arrival of a Jesuit missionary Father Castiglione in Beijing, he taught the practice of oil painting on glass, a common practice in europe but unknown at the time in China, the intersection of European and Chinese art forms created these mirrors for european export.
The mirror to the left of the picture has been "plated" in the 19th century with a secondary piece of glass to cover a crack in the original mirror.
Price is for the pair.
