A Pair of George III Side Chairs in the manner of Mayhew & Ince

Ref: 16352

£3,800.00

A pair of ash and elm side chairs in the manner of Mayhew & Ince.

The oval back centred by a crest, details below, above a shaped seat and square tapering legs with foot blocks, swept rear legs. The crest as depicted upon this Pair of George III Hall Chairs dating to circa 1790 - 1810 are those of the family of Trevor, Denbighshire, North Wales.

They may be emblazoned as follows:

"Upon a chapeau gules turned up ermine a wyvern rising sable".

Upon the balance of probability and without any evidence to the contrary, these hall chairs were in the possession of a gentleman of the Trevor family. This family was well established in the Welsh border County of Denbighshire for many centuries. The family was also seated in neighbouring Welsh counties as well as the English County of Shropshire. The gentleman who owned these chairs was undoubtedly a kinsman to the Viscounts Hampden and Barons Trevor as there are no incidents of peerage (i.e. a coronet of rank) shown associated with the crest and given the presumed dating of the chairs there is a likelihood that the chairs could well have been commissioned by John Hampden-Trevor (born 24th February 1748 died 9th September 1824), the 3rd Viscount Hampden and 6th Baron Trevor (of Bromham) prior to succeeding to these peerages in 1824

John was the second (and surviving) son of Robert Hampden-Trevor (born 17th February 1706 and died 22nd August 1783), the 1st Viscount Hampden and 4th Baron Trevor (of Bromham) and his wife, Constantia de Huybert. He succeeded his brother, Thomas Hampden-Trevor (born 1746 died 20th August 1824), the 2nd Viscount Hampden and 5th Baron Trevor (of Bromham), but sadly held these peerages for only three weeks dying on the 9th September 1824.

The partnership between William Ince and John Mayhew (circa 1758-1804) is one of the longest-lived of any 18th-century firm, and their reputation as makers of the finest furniture is equal in rank to that of Thomas Chippendale and William Vile. Some of their more notable projects include the furnishings of Croome Court for the 6th Earl of Coventry, the extensive refurbishing of Burghley House for the 9th Earl of Exeter, and the prestigious order of several residences for the 4th Duke of Marlborough, to whom the firm dedicated its 1759-63 volume "The Universal System of Household Furniture".
