Investiture Red Chairs

Ref: 11908

Sold.

A pair of unused Investiture “Red” chairs in their original boxes. Designed by Anthony Armstrong Jones, The Earl of Snowden.

Produced in 1969 and having a total production run of 4,000.

Manufactured by the Remploy factory in Bridgend South Wales, the chairs have beechwood frames with seats and backs constructed from preformed plywood, veneered in olive ash and stained in a vermillion red. The backs are embossed with the Prince of Wales’ feathers in gold leaf and the seats are upholstered in red Welsh tweed, using a stable dye that would not run onto the guest’s clothes in case of a Welsh downpour. The underside of the seat bears a Prince of Wales feathers stamp, the date and – obscured by the upholstery – individual handwritten numbering.

I have a personal connection to these chairs as my Grandfather was a stonemason and master tiler “John Lesley Pritchard” and built the Welsh Slate Dias designed by brutalist designer, John Pound that the ceremony took place on. It still survives at the castle till this day.
