Ray Tucknott joined the Royal Navy as a junior at the age of 15 in 1963 where he learnt basic knot techniques. Serving as a submariner on diesel submarines he became L/C of the Towed Recovery Array team. Though he learnt basic ropework in the navy, he was mostly self-taught and was widely known for producing detailed pieces for houses and ships.
