A Regency Bookcase by George Bullock

Ref: 15880

£24,000.00

A Regency brass mounted burr elm, holly and oak marquetry breakfront bookcase.

The break front pediment surmounted by acroterion, centred by inlaid anthemion and scrolling floral rosettes above glazed doors with brass mouldings, the base having conforming inlaid decoration, veined jade green “Mona” marble shelf above the central breakfront doors all enclosing matching drawers.

Attributed to George Bullock, circa 1825.

This bookcase has many of the feature characteristic of George Bullock's workshop, most notably the holly and oak marquetry, the brass mounts and the black staining to the lining. A group of furniture with very similar marquetry was sold from Tew Park, Oxfordshire (Christie's house sale, 27-29 May 1987), which were commissioned by Matthew Robinson Boulton from Bullock & Morant.

A small open bookcase exhibiting the same scrolling floral design was sold at Christie’s, Fulham Road, “The Collector Sale”, Lot 63, November 2017.

In 1806 George Bullock, then based in Liverpool, purchased a quarry at Maes Mawr Farm, Llanfechell, for £1,000, the marble used on the shelf is this “Mona” marble.
